PIR Motion Sensor – Passive Infrared Sensor for Motion Detection Projects
What is It?
A PIR (Passive Infrared) motion sensor detects movement of people, animals, or objects by sensing infrared radiation (heat) in its surroundings. It's commonly used in security systems, automatic lighting, and Arduino projects.
Key Features:
- Voltage: 4.5V – 20V DC (5V typical for Arduino use)
- Detection Range: ~3 to 7 meters
- Angle: ~120°
- Delay Time & Sensitivity: Adjustable (via onboard potentiometers)
- Output Type: Digital (HIGH when motion is detected)
- Pins: VCC, GND, OUT
Common Uses:
- Motion-activated lights
- Burglar alarms
- People counters
- Energy-saving automation
Wiring with Arduino:
PIR Pin | Arduino Pin |
---|---|
VCC | 5V |
GND | GND |
OUT | D2 (or any digital pin) |
Tips:
- Allow 10–60 seconds warm-up after powering on
- Place in a clear, unobstructed view for better detection
- Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources
