🔧 Soldering Paste (also known as solder paste) is a semi-solid material used in electronics to temporarily hold components in place and create strong electrical connections when soldering — especially in surface-mount technology (SMT).
🧪 What Is It Made Of?
- Tiny solder particles (usually a tin-lead alloy or lead-free alternative)
- Mixed with flux (a chemical that cleans and prepares metal surfaces for soldering)
🛠️ Main Uses:
- SMT soldering (especially with reflow ovens or hot air guns)
- PCB repair and rework
- Creating clean, low-resistance joints
- Helping solder flow evenly during heat application
🔥 How to Use It:
- Apply paste to pads on a PCB using a syringe, stencil, or toothpick.
- Place components on top — paste holds them in place.
- Heat with hot air gun or reflow oven until solder melts and forms joints.
- Allow to cool — components are now electrically and mechanically bonded.
📦 Common Types:
Type | Description |
---|---|
Sn63/Pb37 | Traditional 63% tin, 37% lead (low melting point, ~183°C) |
Lead-Free (RoHS) | Common mix: Sn96.5/Ag3.0/Cu0.5 (~217–220°C) |
No-Clean Paste | Leaves minimal residue — no cleaning needed |
Water-soluble | Easier cleanup with water, but must be cleaned |
⚠️ Tips & Warnings:
- Store in a cool place (even fridge!) to extend shelf life
- Avoid skin contact — contains chemicals
- Don’t use expired paste — it may not flow or bond well
- Clean PCB before use for best results
